Literature Text

My mother named me Amirah (princess)
And raised me to be such.
High shoulders, sharp mind, and sense of justice unmatched by any other.
She told me when I was very young, to treat each person
each animal
each grain of sand
with the same kindness, adoration and respect
And she taught me that if I want it,
the whole world is my kingdom
But I was content in my little corner in the east.
My father taught me how to speak words that inspire
teach
unify
And so I used my voice, to make friends, connections
stronger and thicker than any rope

I came into my teenage quasi womanhood living in a tiny world
Only vaguely aware of what was around me
I took for granted the feel of sun on my neck
and ocean spray in my face
and the way my long hair tangled in the wind.
I had the thirst for knowlege bred deep within me
and all the time in the world at my feet.
I didn't know how much I would need those lessons I learned at such a young age

My world shattered around me when I was sixteen,
and I saw for the first time, the bright red stain of blood
on the tanned olive skin of my father's forehead.
And I vowed then that I would use what he taught me
and refuse to let it go to waste

It was then the trouble in my kingdom became completely apparent
And so with very little to my name, the materials on my back
I began a journey to help people realize the beauty in the world,
my world.

I went to places torn by war, walked barefoot through
streets cluttered with building debris
And held my head high, unafraid of mines that waited for
any careless footstep
I held children in my arms, stroking their blood soaked hair
and wiping tears from their eyes as their mothers were covered in cloth
I rebuilt houses, and hope
I stood screaming in the center of destruction and explosions
I marched for independence in Palestine
I spoke for freedom in Saudi Arabia
I fought, shot, stabbed for justice in Lebanon
And I write now, so you know
so you can find a voice
and join know that you matter.
You, Amir, Bassem, Areej, Murat, Vito, Juan, Alexander, Matthew, Adam...
the whole world is your kingdom
Don't let it be destroyed.
Don't close your eyes and turn your back
because your people, my people, our people, need you.

Isn't that worth fighting for?
This was originally in Arabic... I translated it, but it lost a lot. Hope you enjoy anyway.
